Marvin’s Room by Drake

Marvin’s Room. This song was a challenge when first starting. My client chose Marvin’s Room and his colors were bright pink and baby blue. With two bright and lively colors, it took me some time to depict how to reflect what this song meant to him.

If you ask someone who had heard this song before, they might tell you it’s about Drake being cheated on. I however, beg to differ. When I paint for a client, I listen to their songs over and over again until it’s familiar. I listen to the instrumental tones, I look up lyrics and I even look up different versions of the song to see if there is a hidden meaning or emotion to the original. When listening to Marvin’s Room, I could feel the somber energy coming from my client. I tend to find out if there are specific parts, versus or simple lyrical sentences that stick out to each client.

His response to this was “I know you still think about the times we had.”

I used this line to embrace a memory, one that most of us might have with someone from our past. The memory that makes us question “What if?”

When I created his painting, I used his color choices to represent his consistent and positive personality.

Looking at this piece, you see his personality show with pink and blue. I used a darker gray for the base of the canvas, but I scraped the paint so that it wouldn’t cover the canvas completely. I did this on purpose because the gray represents the feelings from this song, the feelings of “What if?” Silver represents all of his beautiful moments, the ones that outshine the painful ones. If you were to see this piece from the side, you will see that I created it so that the bright colors look as if they are floating.

The brightness of the painting shows through but it doesn’t cover the pain completely.

It shows to represent that we all have something that we have fought through; we all have a pain that sometimes just doesn’t go away. However, our lives are still filled with these beautiful bright moments that can outshine some of our most painful times.
